Regular Membership Meeting

Dr. Ellen O’Connor, President, called the meeting to order. 
 
Dr. O’Connor introduced Ellen Kahane, eInstruction, who distributed clickers to the audience.  Engaging students and getting them to pay attention, participate and interact with teachers and other students has been shown to help them learn and perform better in both formative and summative assessments. eInstruction offers a number of user-friendly devices, from student response systems to interactive whiteboards and hand-held portable digital tablets to one of the most versatile and most widely used software programs in the field.
 
Secretary’s Report:  Mary Ann Napolitan distributed the Minutes of the September 23, 2011 and October 21, 2011 Regular Monthly Meetings. 
 
Treasurer’s Report:  Dr. Loggi
·        Account Balance to Date $84,475
·        Dr. Loggi reported on the issues listed below:
o       FY11 allocations being revised
o       Connect to Compete
o       Race to the Top
o       College and Workplace
o       Student Growth and Success
o       Blue Ribbon Schools
o       Governor’s Priority:  S2881, S1872, S2925, S3002, A4168, A4167
o       State applied for waiver
 
 
 
Brenda Grant thanked those present for attending.  With your membership you should be receiving the NAFEPA newsletter.  There are 46 membership renewals and the membership application can be found on the website, www.njafpa.net.  
 
 
At present there are 430 registered for the Winter Training Institute on December 2 here, at the Sheraton Eatontown.  Dr. Loggi will inquire regarding a conference room rate.
 
Dr. O’Connor mentioned that we have 25 registered for the Spring Training Institute May 23-24, 2012.  Robert Marzano is the program for May 23 and Successful Districts for May 24.  The Commissioner has been invited and, also, Assistant Commissioner Bari Erlichson.  We will apply for a waiver for lodging and, in the past, Harrah’s has offered a generous room rate.

Dr. O’Connor recognized and welcomed first-time meeting attendees.
 
Dr. O’Connor introduced Raquel Sinai, Bilingual Education Coordinator, Bureau of Bilingual/ESL Education, NJ Department of Education.  Ms. Sinai discussed new directions in policy and accountability in Title III of No Child Left Behind.
